These Release Notes discuss the steps to install Oracle8i client components on Windows XP. These Release Notes supplement Oracle8i Release Notes for Windows and component readme files that were distributed with the Oracle8i release 3 (8.1.7.0.0) for Windows software.

Oracle Components Certified on Windows XP

Only the client components from the 8.1.7.3.0 or higher patch set for Oracle8i Server for Windows are certified on the 32-bit version of Windows XP Professional Edition. Table 1 lists these client components. Releases prior to the 8.1.7.3.0 patch set for Oracle8i Server for Windows are not certified on Windows XP.

Required Oracle8i Installation Components

This section lists and describes the three installation components required to install Oracle8i client components on Windows XP. Oracle Corporation recommends downloading and installing Oracle software on a computer that does not have Oracle software already installed.

  1. Obtain the following installation components:

  2. Continue to "Additional Oracle8i Installation Components" before beginning your installation.

Oracle Universal Installer Patch for Windows XP

This component is a patch that you must download from OracleMetaLink. It contains Oracle Universal Installer 2.2.0.12.0 and JRE 1.3.1.1.0a. It also creates an Oracle home for Oracle components on Windows XP. You must use this release of Oracle Universal Installer to install Oracle8i components on Windows XP.

To obtain the Oracle Universal Installer patch:

  1. Create a directory for this component. For example, c:\temp\oui.

    Log into OracleMetaLink at http://metalink.oracle.com. You must register online before using OracleMetaLink.

  2. Click the Patches button from the left-hand column.

  3. Find the Oracle Universal Installer patch for Windows XP. To find this patch, enter the values defined in Table 2 and then click Submit.

  3. Download the patch.

  4. Unzip the patch into the directory you created for this component. For example, c:\temp\oui.

Oracle8i Release 3 (8.1.7.0.0) for Windows

This component is the initial release of 8.1.7.0.0 for Windows. This software is available on the Oracle8i Client CD or the client installation type on the Oracle8i Server CD of your CD pack. This software is also available for download from Oracle Technology Network (OTN).

To download the Oracle8i release 3 (8.1.7.0.0) software:

  1. Create a directory for this component. For example, c:\temp\81700.

  2. Download the software from OTN: 

    http://otn.oracle.com/software/products/oracle8i/content.html
  3. Unzip the software into the directory you created for this component. For example, c:\temp\81700.

8.1.7.3.0 Patch Set for Oracle8i Server for Windows

This component is a patch set that you must download from OracleMetaLink. You must install Oracle8i release 3 (8.1.7.0.0) for Windows before you install this component. Note that only the client components listed in Table 1 are certified on Windows XP.

For Pro*C/C++ support, you must download the 8.1.7.4.0 patch set for Oracle8i Server instead of the 8.1.7.3.0 patch set.

To obtain the 8.1.7.3 patch set:

  1. Create a directory for this component. For example, c:\temp\81730.

  2. Find the 8.1.7.3.0 patch set for Oracle8i Server on OracleMetaLink. To find this patch set, enter the values defined in Table 3 and then click Submit.

8.1.7.4.0 Patch Set for Oracle8i Server for Windows

This component is a patch set that you must download from OracleMetaLink in order to support Pro*C/C++ 8.1.7.4.0. You do not need to download and install both the 8.1.7.3.0 and the 8.1.7.4.0 patch sets; only download the 8.1.7.4.0 patch set for Pro*C/C++ support on Windows XP.

You must install Oracle8i release 3 (8.1.7.0.0) for Windows before you install this component. Note that only the client components listed in Table 1 are certified on Windows XP.

To obtain the 8.1.7.4 patch set:

  1. Create a directory for this component. For example, c:\temp\81740.

  2. Find the 8.1.7.4.0 patch set for Oracle8i Server on OracleMetaLink. To find this patch set, enter the values defined in Table 4 and then click Submit.

Additional Oracle8i Installation Components

You only need to obtain these additional installation components if you plan to install Oracle ODBC Driver, Oracle Provider for OLE DB, OO4O, or OraMTS. Obtain the necessary patches from OracleMetaLink, then continue to "Installation Tasks".

Important:

Only install these four components after you have completed Tasks 1 through 3. To install these components, refer to Task 4 for details.

This section lists the search criteria for the following component patches:

Oracle ODBC Patch

To obtain the Oracle ODBC patch:

  1. Create a directory for this component. For example, c:\temp\odbc.

  2. Find the patch for Oracle ODBC on OracleMetaLink. To find this patch, enter the values defined in Table 5 and then click Submit.

Oracle Provider for OLE DB Patch

To obtain the Oracle Provider for OLE DB patch:

  1. Create a directory for this component. For example, c:\temp\oraOLEDB.

  2. Find the patch for Oracle Provider for OLE DB on OracleMetaLink. To find this patch, enter the values defined in Table 6 and then click Submit.

OO4O Patch

To obtain the OO4O patch:

  1. Create a directory for this component. For example, c:\temp\oo4o.

  2. Find the patch for OO4O on OracleMetaLink. To find this patch, enter the values defined in Table 7 and then click Submit.

OraMTS Patch

To obtain the OraMTS patch:

  1. Create a directory for this component. For example, c:\temp\oraMTS.

  2. Find the patch for OraMTS on OracleMetaLink. To find this patch, enter the values defined in Table 8 and then click Submit.

  4. Unzip the patch into the directory you created for this component. For example, c:\temp\oraMTS.

Installation Tasks

Oracle Corporation recommends installing Oracle software on a computer that does not have Oracle software already installed.

The first three installations tasks are required and must be completed in the following order. Additional, separate installations are required to install Oracle ODBC Driver, Oracle Provider for OLE DB, OO4O, or OraMTS. Install each component in the same Oracle home.

Task 1: Install Oracle Universal Installer Patch for Windows XP

This process installs Oracle Universal Installer 2.2.0.12.0 and JRE 1.3.1.1.0a, and creates an Oracle home for Oracle components on Windows XP. Only Oracle Universal Installer 2.2.0.12.0 and JRE 1.3.1.1.0a are certified for Windows XP.

To install the Oracle Universal Installer patch for Windows XP:

  1. Run setup.exe located at the root of the unzipped installation area. For example, c:\temp\oui\setup.exe.

  2. Click Next to install this patch.

    After completing this task, Oracle Universal Installer 2.2 is accessible from the following locations:

    • Start > Programs > Oracle Installation Products > Universal Installer

    • c:\Program Files\Oracle\oui\install\setup.exe

  3. Click Next Install to continue with the second required installation.

  4. Continue to "Task 2: Install Oracle8i Release 3 (8.1.7.0.0) for Windows".

Task 2: Install Oracle8i Release 3 (8.1.7.0.0) for Windows

The second required installation is the Oracle8i client software. Note that only the components listed in Table 1 are certified on Windows XP.

To install Oracle8i release 3 (8.1.7.0.0) for Windows:

  1. Enter the source location of the 8.1.7.0.0 products.jar file in the Source Path field in the File Location window. For example:

    • c:\temp\81700\stage\products.jar

    • cdrom_drive:\stage\products.jar

  2. Choose the Oracle home created in Task 1 in the Destination Path field in the File Locations window.

  3. Click Next.

  4. The installation windows that appear depend upon the type of installation you are performing. Proceed to one of the following steps:

    • If you are installing the Oracle8i client software from the Oracle8i database component software, continue to step a.

    • If you are installing the Oracle8i client software from the client component software, continue to step c.

    1. Select Oracle8i Client 8.1.7.0.0 from the Available Products window, and then click Next.

    2. Select the Custom option from the Installation Types window, and then click Next. Continue to step 5.

    3. Select the Custom option from the Installation Types window, and then click Next. Continue to step 5.

  5. Select which components to install from the Available Product Components window. Note that only the components listed in Table 1 are certified on Windows XP.

    Important:

    Do not install Oracle ODBC Driver, Oracle Provider for OLE DB, OO4O, or OraMTS at this time.

    You must manually deselect these components. Deselect the following check boxes:

    • Oracle Services for Microsoft Transaction Server 8.1.7.0.0

    • Development Tools 8.1.7.0.0 under Oracle Programmer 8.1.7.0.0

  6. Click Next to install the components you selected.

  7. Click Next Install from the End of Installation window to continue with the third, required installation.

  8. Continue to "Task 3: Install 8.1.7.3.0 Patch Set for Oracle8i Server for Windows".

Task 3: Install 8.1.7.3.0 Patch Set for Oracle8i Server for Windows

To install the 8.1.7.3.0 patch set for Oracle8i Server for Windows:

  1. Enter the source location of the 8.1.7.3.0 products.jar file in the Source Path field in the File Locations window. For example, c:\temp\81730\stage\products.jar.

  2. Choose the Oracle home created in Task 1 in the Destination Path field in the File Locations window.

  3. Click Next to install this patch set.

  4. Click Next Install from the End of Installation window if you are installing Oracle ODBC Driver, Oracle Provider for OLE DB, OO4O, or OraMTS. Continue to "Task 4: Install Oracle ODBC Driver, Oracle Provider for OLE DB, OO4O, or OraMTS". Otherwise, your installation is complete.

  5. Click Exit.

Task 4: Install Oracle ODBC Driver, Oracle Provider for OLE DB, OO4O, or OraMTS

Only install Oracle ODBC Driver, Oracle Provider for OLE DB, OO4O, or OraMTS after you have completed "Task 1: Install Oracle Universal Installer Patch for Windows XP" through "Task 3: Install 8.1.7.3.0 Patch Set for Oracle8i Server for Windows". Note that each component requires a separate installation into the Oracle home created in Task 1.

To install these components:

  1. Enter the source location of the products.jar file of the component in the Source Path field in the File Locations window. For example, c:\temp\odbc\stage\products.jar.

  2. Choose the Oracle home created in Task 1 in the Destination Path field in the File Locations window.

  3. Click Next to install the component.

  4. Click Next Install from the End of Installation window if you are installing the remaining three components. Otherwise, your installation is complete.

  5. Click Exit.

Deinstallation Steps

To deinstall Oracle components:

  1. Start Oracle Universal Installer from one of the following locations:

    • Start > Programs > Oracle Installation Products > Universal Installer

    • c:\Program Files\Oracle\oui\install\setup.exe

  2. Click Deinstall Products.

    The Inventory window appears.

  3. Expand the tree of installed components until you find the components to deinstall.

  4. Select which components to deinstall.

  5. Click Remove.

    The Confirmation window appears.

  6. Click Yes to deinstall the selected components.
